The basics
What is Escape Velocity?
An online net worth tracker. It estimates the date work could become optional.
Is this financial advice?
This is not financial advice. It does arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
What does an account do?
It holds your email address and your numbers. You log in with a link we email you, on any device. It can also send your reminder email.
Does it connect to my bank?
It works from the values you type in or import from a CSV.
Does it come with sample data?
You start with an empty account. The dashboard, forecast and reports open once your first investment is in.
Can I import and export?
Yes. Import a CSV with Name, Type, Updated Date and Value. Export a backup file or CSV.

Your numbers and your data
Where are my numbers saved?
In your account, stored encrypted. Log in on any device to see them. A backup file gives you your own copy.
Does logging in bring my numbers to a new device?
Yes. Log in and your numbers are there.
What if I lose my phone?
Log in on another device. Your numbers are saved to your account.
Will I get emails?
Your log-in link when you ask for one, and a note if you delete the account. The check-in reminder, milestone emails and the monthly update are each off until you switch them on. Each has an unsubscribe link. The emails contain no amounts.
What do the milestone and monthly emails store?
The check-in reminder stores your address and your day. For milestone emails and the monthly update, the app sends us your milestone position and the month’s moves as percentages and counts, after a check-in. Amounts and the names you typed are never sent. Switching an email off deletes what was sent for it.
How do I delete everything?
Delete your account from the Account page. That removes everything we hold for you: your email address, your numbers, your logins, your reminder, what was sent for your emails and your entry in the community.
What is the community?
An optional page of anonymous figures from members who join. Joining shares a country, ranges, percentages and ready-made choices, with no amounts or names. See the Community page.
Forecasts and numbers
How does the forecast work?
Each month your balance grows by one-twelfth of the yearly rate, plus your monthly amount. It’s an estimate. See the maths.
What’s the 4% rule?
A rule of thumb from US research on retirements of about 30 years. It isn’t a guarantee.
Why does it say 15% growth?
The automatic estimate is capped at 15% and includes money you added. Type your own for a cautious view.
Is it adjusted for inflation?
Only if you use a growth rate after inflation. Die with zero uses today’s dollars.
What is Die with zero?
A plan that shows whether you are saving more than you need. It includes a bucket list and a life-in-weeks grid.
